I’ve been thinking about what Brisbane’s missing in terms of food supplies and have come up with this list. Would love you to add to it.
What we lack in Brisbane…
1. A CHEESE SHOP
A shop dedicated solely to cheese from all over the world. Not a deli. A cheese shop. Why is it so hard?
2. An ethnic bakery/cake shop. Jewish? Middle Eastern? East European would be good.(and while we’re on the subject, has always fascinated me why Vietnamese bakeries in Brisbane serve awful ‘Aussie’ stuff like bad custard slices. The bakeries in Vietnam, make some of the best baguette I’ve had!)
3. A takeaway rotisserie shop. Free range chicken, ducks, pork. mmm.
4. More independent wine shops
5. Patisseries.- we need more Chouquette type bakeries all over Brisbane. It should NOT be this hard to get a decent croissant in this day and age.
6. A serious dumpling bar.
7. Wine bars. Loads of wines by the glass, nice simple wine-friendly food. No wank.
8. A barbecue restaurant. Like the have in the southern states of the US. 12hr cooked meat, outside tables.
9. A bookshop dedicated to food/cooking
10. More cooking schools

I would give numerous mortgage payments per year to a proper fromagerie…. OMG my mouth just ‘gasmed at the thought, but the baguette next door must be fresh and “right”!

There was a ‘sort of’ cheese shop in Kelvin Grove urban village shopping centre when it first opened. It was part of the deli but had a temperature controlled room with lots of cheeses. Think it suffered from lack of customers

Yes, you’re right, I’d forgotten all about that. Probably too much of a studenty demographic. Paddington. That’s where I’d put it*. (*disclaimer: suggestion may or may not be based on proximity to my house)

Laughing at you two
Totally agree on fromagerie, And better bakeries. The closest I have ever been to a ‘proper’ dumpling bar is Taste Gallery. But I have nothing to compare it to. Share your experience on a ‘proper’ dumpling bar – anyone? As for a cookbook shop – Mmmmm!

A fish market. A PROPER FISH MARKET!!! We have so much beautiful seafood in Queensland but it’s really hard to source fresh, sustainable seafood except from 1 or 2 places. I would dance a jig of joy if we got one of these.

I couldn’t agree more! Brisbane fiodine population is growing but I am not sure if the city is keeping up.

We want fromagerie! It could be just a little one a-la La Cave …. http://www.la-cave.co.uk/ oh cave of cheeeeese! Also agree with the baguette point – where are they? Why can’t one get a good baguette in this damned city? Cheese, wine and a good baguette. Heaven.

While they are not a dedicated cheese vendor, you could try Pennisi Cuisine in Woolloongabba. they have a massive range of imported cheese….at least 170 the last time I was there.
